Conditions We Treat

Many people seeking therapy for mental health conditions and life stressors will achieve strength and recovery through participation in individual or group treatment.  Since there is no one treatment that works for everyone, you will have the option of choosing the type of therapy or combination of therapies that you prefer.  Some of the conditions that we treat are listed below although these are just a few.

Loneliness
Depression

Depression is a mood disorder that causes feelings of sadness and loss of interest. Depression can affect how one feels, thinks, and behaves. Without treatment, it can lead to emotional and physical problems. Depression can negatively impact one’s functioning but with a variety of treatments including therapy, one can begin to heal.

Anxiety is a mental health condition centered around excessive worry which can make it hard for one to get through the day. This condition can interfere with your ability to function, cause an overreaction to something that triggers the emotion, and cause a lack of control of responses to situations. This can include feelings of nervousness, panic, fear, sweating, and rapid heartbeat. Anxiety can be treated in therapy.

Grief and loss are conditions in which one loses an important loved one. Unfortunately, this is a common experience that people face, leading to a period of sorrow, numbness, anger, depression and guilt. Feelings of loss can be debilitating and sometimes don’t improve with time. Everyone grieves these losses differently, but they can be treated with support and grief therapy.

Building Self-Esteem

Self-esteem greatly contributes to one's well-being.  Impaired self-esteem may lead to a number of unwanted emotions such as worry, depression, shame, guilt and self-doubt.  It can prevent people from establishing fulfilling relationships, create problems at work or home and lead to self-destructive thoughts and behaviors.  Therapy can help uncover the root of the impaired self-esteem, increase awareness of the relationship between poor sense of self, negative thoughts and self sabotaging behaviors as well as work toward self acceptance.

Trauma

Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event that has occurred in one’s life, such as an accident or natural disaster. Shock and denial are common after the event, but long-term reactions can include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, overwrought relationships, and possibly physical symptoms. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help ease these symptoms for one that has experienced a traumatic event.

Relationship Conflict

Relationship conflict can occur when there are differences with a partnership's idea of values and needs. A partner may place blame, create control, or turn to ultimatums. This conflict can threaten a relationship if outside help is not sought out. A therapist is a great place to turn when partners cannot find a solution between themselves.

These disorders can include anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and addictive behaviors. ADHD

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a chronic mental health condition that begins in childhood and can continue into adulthood affecting millions of people.  It involves persistent symptoms of deficit in sustaining attention, hyperactivity and behaving impulsively.  Early intervention is key as children with ADHD may develop or struggle with low self-esteem, troubled relationships and poor school performance.  Symptoms may lessen with age but for some they don't.  At any point in one's life, therapy can help in learning strategies to be successful.

 Dual Diagnosis

Dual diagnosis is when mental health conditions co-exist with substance abuse.  Both of these disorders affect the brain similarly.  It is not always clear which disorder occurs first but it is clear that they complicate one another.  Seeking treatment with a therapist that specializes in dual-diagnosis will help one to understand the relationship between their emotional state and substance use while working to cope without use of the substance.

 Addictive Behavior

Addiction is so much more than substance abuse.  Behavioral addiction can follow the same pattern as substance use addictions often resulting in problems in many areas of a person's life.  One with behavioral addiction, will find it difficult or be unable to stop the compulsive behavior despite the negative consequences.  Common behavioral addictions include food, work, shopping, pornography, sex, exercise, gambling, screen time, social media and video gaming.  Therapists treating addictive behaviors will use approaches that are similar to those used in dual diagnosis treatment.
